Educators to march for school funding
Monday, March 19, 2001 | 8:33 a.m.
The Clark County Education Association is planning its second rally to raise awareness of public schools' funding needs.
From 10 a.m. to noon March 31, teachers, administrators, support staff, union members, politicians, parents and students are expected to turn out for a march on the Strip. The rally begins at 75 E. Harmon Ave., behind the Harley-Davidson Cafe. Participants will march from the Aladdin to the Venetian and back.
The public is invited.
The union is stressing the district's need to attract, retain and support quality teachers, along with smaller classrooms and increased pay for starting and experienced teachers.
John Jasonek, executive director of the teachers' union, said the 2-mile march will "show Las Vegas' rich and vibrant infrastructure that public school funding is needed immediately and Nevada can no longer wait."
He also said that cutbacks in arts, physical education and sports programs are not the answers to reducing costs.
Last month the union held a public rally also devoted to raising awareness that more funding for schools is needed. That one took place on Paradise Road near the Howard Hughes business center.
Additional information on the rally is available by calling 733-3063.
