Columnist Steve Addy: St. Joe’s won over some fans
Monday, March 19, 2001 | 10:48 a.m.
Sun basketball writer Steve Addy will be filing daily postcards from NCAA Tournament sites.
Farewell to San Diego:
Now who am I going to root for?
My new favorite team lost -- St. Joseph's. That means no more coach Phil Martelli, who was having more fun than anyone in the NCAA Tournament, and no more Marvin O'Connor, the hot-shot guard who made everyone take notice.
Don't get the idea that I was rooting against the math majors from Stanford. It's hard to cheer against those guys. But when they beat St. Joe's 90-83 on Saturday, well, the West Regional lost a lot of flair.
Next season, I guarantee a lot of folks will be keeping an eye on St. Joe's, the tiny Jesuit school from Philadelphia. The Hawks will have one of the best backcourts in the nation with Jameer Nelson and O'Connor, as long as they don't bolt to the NBA.
This week's field in Anaheim will feature quality teams -- Stanford, Cincinnati, Maryland and Georgetown -- but a lot of the personality just flew back to Philly.
Oh well, on to Anaheim,
-- Addy
