BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Louisiana House Criminal Justice Committee today was expected to approve a tax cut for Harrah's New Orleans casino that the casino says is needed to ensure its survival. Committee action would advance the bill to debate by the full House.
The new contract, already approved by the Senate, puts the tax rate for the casino at 21.5 percent, the same that is to be paid by riverboat casinos.
The casino cannot afford the current $100 million tax and will close on March 31 without relief, putting 2,500 full time employees out of work, supporters say.
