Columnist Steve Addy: Where are the fans?
Thursday, March 15, 2001 | 10:30 a.m.
Sun basketball writer Steve Addy will be filing daily postcards from NCAA Tournament sites.
Greetings from sunny San Diego -- So, tell me, where's the tournament?
The Sun sent me here for the NCAA West Regional, but on Wednesday the tournament was more rumor than reality. In town, there was almost no indication that the event is here for the first time since John Wooden was at UCLA.
If this was Indianapolis, the downtown streets would be barricaded and fans would've packed the arena for Wednesday's open practices. But barely a handful of fans stopped by Cox Arena for the workouts. Hey, folks, San Diego State's season is over. Stanford is here now. Heard of them?
Oh well. Gotta go now. I hear Rick Pitino's coming to town, because he's "very interested" in the coaching job at La Jolla Middle School. If Joanne finds a nice house, it's a done deal.
Peace, Addy
