Sun wins AP awards

For the second consecutive year the Las Vegas Sun has captured a first-place award in the Associated Press News Executives Council contest honoring top news writing and photography by AP member newspapers in California and Nevada.
The Sun won first place in the Division III (circulation 25,000-74,000) Graphics category for "Aladdin Opens," by Pam Killinsworth and Adam Bucci, and second place for Division III website (lasvegassun.com) behind the Marin Independent Journal (marinij.com).
Last year the Sun won three awards in the AP California-Nevada contest, including the Fairbanks Award for Public Service for Benjamin Grove's "Story of a Fourth Grade Class."
"We are very proud to have been honored by our colleagues with a first place in this contest for a second consecutive year," Sun Managing Editor Michael J. Kelley said.
"And to be, again, the only Southern Nevada daily to win in this prestigious contest is recognition for the Sun's continued commitment to journalism excellence for our readers and our community."
The winners were chosen from more than 1,100 entries by editors from AP member newspapers in Illinois. Awards will be presented in 62 categories at the annual APNEC Conference May 5 in Monterey, Calif.
