Letter: When drivers are potential felons
Monday, March 12, 2001 | 8:28 a.m.
Consider the following scenario:
I'm on a first date with a young lady who I'm greatly attracted to. In the course of the evening she whips out a joint and lights up. I'm trying to make a good impression, so I take a couple of hits and we have a fine time. Three days later I'm in my car, innocently waiting for a signal when some idiot rear-ends me, killing himself, totaling my car and injuring me.
Because of the seriousness of the accident they draw my blood and bingo! More than two nanograms -- under the law that Jessica Williams was convicted of violating. In spite of my innocence, I'm guilty of a felony and facing a mandatory 2 years to 20 years in prison. How many thousands of Nevadans have this particular Sword of Damocles hanging over their heads? In the land of the free and the home of the brave, how can such a law be constitutional?
