Letter: Democrats know budget makes sense
Monday, March 12, 2001 | 8:27 a.m.
Honestly, I don't see what the fuss is about. Democrats complain about tax breaks for the rich. If the rich aren't married, no break. Not dead? No break there either. The marginal rates won't phase in for years. So what are they really complaining about? I see a fiscally sound budget based upon Congressional Budget Office numbers, which are historically too conservative.
Bill Clinton was as surprised as the rest of his party that the budget went into surplus. But it was these same fiscally conservative principles that Bush is proposing that got us there and will keep us there. The last tax cut was on capital gains, and it created more tax revenues than anyone even guessed. Cut my taxes and I will put that money back into circulation here in Las Vegas, not in Washington, D.C., where it will be used to pay for another sea port in West Virginia.
Twenty years after Reagan, even Democrats realize that cutting taxes is the solution to a slowing economy -- not tax increases or a "stimulus package."
