NLV voters to decide use of tax hike

Thursday, March 8, 2001 | 10:36 a.m.

Voters will have the chance to determine how a property tax increase that was approved by North Las Vegas residents in June 1995 will be used.

Originally the tax increase was intended to pay for street maintenance and debt service. The city would now like to expand the use of revenue generated by the increase to include paying for improvements to city parks and fire stations.

The council approved a resolution that would put the proposed change on the June 5 general election ballot.

The ballot question would stress that the tax will not be increased, but that there will be an expansion of the use of that money generated by the original increase, according to city documents.

Property owners currently pay a tax of 24 cents per $100 of the assessed value of their homes.

In addition, the city is seeking citizens to serve on committee regarding the ballot question. Applications and other information can be obtained on the city's website (www.ci.north-las-vegas.nv.us).
