Lady Rebels’ Davis questioned by police about off-campus incident

Wednesday, March 7, 2001 | 10:01 a.m.

UNLV could be without starting guard Kinesha Davis when the Lady Rebels open Mountain West Conference tournament play against BYU today at 6 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Davis, a 5-10 junior from Brooklyn Center, Minn., was led away by campus police from the school's South Gym during a team workout on Tuesday afternoon. She was briefly questioned about her involvement in what school officials termed "an off-campus incident" and then released.

Lady Rebels head coach Regina Miller, who was not at the gym at the time of the questioning, said police wanted to question Davis about a domestic dispute she had with a boyfriend. She refused to discuss the details of that dispute.

"Basically, it's a non-story," Miller said. "They just wanted to ask Kinesha some questions and then they released her. She's OK to play (tonight)."

But Davis missed UNLV's evening shootaround at the Thomas & Mack on Tuesday night and Miller hinted there is a possibility she may not play in tonight's game.

"It depends how she is emotionally after this," Miller said. "If she's ready emotionally to play, then she'll play. But if she isn't, then we'll do what's best for the team. Her family is in town and she's spending (Tuesday night) with them."

Third-team all-MWC pick Constance Jinks would get the start if Davis can't go.

The timing of the incident couldn't be worse for the Lady Rebels (18-8), who still have hopes of earning an NCAA Tournament bid. For that to happen, UNLV will either have to win the tourney or at least reach the championship final. In either case, the Lady Rebels will likely have to upset 13th-ranked Utah (25-2, 14-0) in Friday afternoon's semifinals.
