Writers between 7 and 15 years old are encouraged to participate in national writing contest held by Victory Press.
The theme for this year's writing contest is "Heroines in History." All entries must be 100 to 500 words, handwritten and submitted by March 31.

Free lecture planned Tuesday
Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services is offering a free lecture 6 p.m. Tuesday, on "Conversations with Your Children: Key to Prevention and Lasting Connection" at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.
Dr. Virginia Douglas will lead the discussion. For more information, call 486-6223.
Committee will discuss monument
Silent Heroes of the Cold War National Monument Committee will discuss plans for a monument 5 p.m. March 17, at the Community College of Southern Nevada's Dental Clinic, on the West Charleston campus.
The group is dedicated to honoring the 14 men killed in the 1955 Charleston Peak plane crash and all other Cold War casualties.
Volunteers to help with program
Free tax advice and services are offered to low-income individuals and the elderly through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
Several hundred tax and law professionals will volunteer at libraries, senior citizen and community centers until April 16. All volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS.

Council selects new officers
The Boulder Dam Area Boy Scout Council has elected new officers.
Dan Van Epp was selected to serve as president, Robert J. Johnston is the new commissioner, Richard Bowler is the new treasurer and Ronald W. Garland will serve as the scout executive.
In addition, nine vice presidents were named, including Ken Beall, David A. Boggs, William R. Hartman, Liliam Lujan Hickey, Thomas J. Krob, Douglas McCaulley, Michael D. Ross, Thomas A. Smith and Tom Warden.
Program chairs Jeff Chain, Gerry A. Hester and Gregory R. Taylor were also selected.
The council serves more than 37,000 youth members and volunteer leaders in southern Nevada, western Arizona and the Colorado River communities in California.
The West Las Vegas Library
