Letter: Tax cut is good for GOP coffers
Monday, March 5, 2001 | 9:09 a.m.
When Ronald Reagan cut the top tax rate 60 percent, from 70 percent to 28 percent, they wanted to put him on Mount Rushmore. Since then every Republican candidate has promised to cut taxes. If the tax cut causes deficits and the Republicans have to raise taxes, they will raise every rate except the top rate. If Democrats have to raise taxes they will raise the top rate, as Clinton did, then Republicans will promise to cut taxes again because it gets votes and raises money.
The "redistribution of wealth" is a catchy Republican phrase used to justify greed. They also like to say that all rich people are hard workers while all poor people are too lazy to work.
