Excalibur dealers vote against organization

Monday, March 5, 2001 | 11:15 a.m.

Dealers at the Excalibur hotel-casino voted against representation by the Transport Workers Union on Saturday.

The final tally in the National Labor Relations Board-supervised election was 79 in favor, 238 against. Twenty-four votes were challenged by the union because the employees work part-time as supervisors, but because these votes cannot change the result of the election, the votes will not be reviewed by the NLRB. One additional vote was voided; 356 workers were eligible to vote.

"It is just another confirmation that our dealers have trust in management," said John Marz, vice president of marketing for Mandalay Resort Group, owner of the Excalibur. "We have a good relationship with them, and they didn't think they needed a third party to talk on their behalf. It's another overwhelming victory for us."

Frank Trotti, organizer for the TWU, said there were no plans to file formal objections. The only disputed election came at the Monte Carlo, also owned by Mandalay.

"We're three of 10," Trotti said. "I wish we'd done better, but it's not our choice. I just don't understand it. Everyone else at these properties is union."

Dealers at the Tropicana, Stratosphere and New Frontier have voted to be represented by the union. Dealers at the Excalibur, MGM Grand, New York-New York, Bally's Las Vegas, Las Vegas Hilton, Monte Carlo and Riviera have voted against. The final election is set for Saturday at Treasure Island.
