LV firm says Florida business intact despite ruling
Friday, March 2, 2001 | 11:19 a.m.
Anchor Gaming Inc. said a subsidiary will continue managing the Florida Lottery despite losing a court ruling Wednesday.
A Florida state appeals court upheld a lower court's decision that said Automated Wagering International Inc.'s 1999 contract with the Florida Lottery was void.
The ruling was issued by a partial panel of the appeals court; Anchor indicated it will ask for a re-hearing before the entire court. While Anchor appeals, the court ruling will not take effect, and AWI will do business with Florida under terms of a contract negotiated last year, the company said.
If Anchor loses this ruling, Anchor said it will begin negotiations with the Florida Lottery for a new contract "consistent with the guidance provided by the court in this case." However, the company said the ruling will not result in the loss of its Florida contract altogether.
The court case dates back to 1995, when the Florida Lottery awarded AWI a contract over GTECH Holdings Corp.
