Letter: Streets not safe for our children
Friday, March 2, 2001 | 8:49 a.m.
The child killed while crossing Searles had the use of a lighted crosswalk. Even that couldn't save him from being a victim of a horrible tragedy. Children are in danger every day from drivers.
In my neighborhood, elementary school children wait for the bus, crowded on a sidewalk, with cars driving between 35-45 mph passing them by on a two-lane street. The older children have to cross Hollywood Boulevard at Washington, without the aid of crosswalk lights, or any other warning lights, for cars to slow down. Cars come to a screechy halt at times to avoid hitting these children as they venture to O'Callaghan Middle School, on a street that has cars driving between 45-60 mph.
Parents in our community have tried myriad ways to bring this to the attention of the county, school district, etc., without any success. I suppose when another child is killed here, maybe, maybe something will be done.
You are known for stories that bring injustices to light. Why aren't our children being more protected from drivers? I suppose because we choose to live in Las Vegas, we have to accept the fact that in this town, children are at the bottom of the totem pole for public policy. What a shame.
