Unions sue over job losses

Thursday, March 1, 2001 | 11:24 a.m.

Four Las Vegas unions filed a class action lawsuit against Santa Fe Hotel Inc. and its former parent company, Santa Fe Gaming Corp., to recover back pay and benefits for a 46-day period for some 1,216 Santa Fe workers who lost their jobs after the hotel was sold to Station Casinos Inc.

The plaintiffs included the Culinary Workers Union local 226, Bartenders Union local 165, International Brotherhood of Teamsters local 995 and International Union of Operating Engineers local 501.

The four unions, on behalf of two former Santa Fe workers, Catherine Palmer and Patricia Sapio, accused the Santa Fe of violating the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act by failing to provide adequate notice to its workers about when they would lose their jobs.

By contrast, the plaintiffs said, the Fiesta hotel-casino "regularly updated its employees as to postponements in the expected date of its sale (to Station Casinos) and provided 60 days notice of its mass layoff after it was sold."

The defendants could not be reached for comment.
