Letter: Commissioners make right call

Thursday, March 1, 2001 | 9:14 a.m.

Sun reporter Launce Rake, as usual, wrote an excellent account of the Feb. 21 Clark County Commission meeting.

I would like to add that the Southern Nevada Group of the Sierra Club was the lead environmental group working on this issue.

Further, our compliments to the Clark County commissioners for seeking a compromise zoning solution for the proposed restaurant near Red Rock and Blue Diamond. Because the full-service dining establishment required a liquor license, there was a conflict with the current zoning.

Originally the developer had asked for a variance to the zoning master plan. Fearful that this would open Red Rock to additional commercial development, the Sierra Club and the residents of Blue Diamond opposed this approach.

Upon hearing many written and e-mail petitions from concerned residents, and following public comments at the aforementioned Clark County Commission meeting, this "spot zoning" approach was not used. Instead the issue will be addressed in the future with a very specific special-use permit.

Good for Red Rock, good for Blue Diamond, and a good decision by the Clark County commissioners.
