Dorothy Kirschen Galatz, the 1988 Clark County Exemplary Mother of the Year, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness at Nathan Adelson Hospice. She was 83.
She was the mother of prominent local attorney Neil Galatz and former Colorado River Commissioner Karen Galatz, who also served as press secretary to former Gov. Richard Bryan.
Services for Dorothy Galatz, who championed the rights of mentally handicapped children, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Palm Mortuary on Eastern Avenue
Galatz was born July 11, 1917, in New York City.
Galatz is survived by three sons, Neil G. Galatz of Las Vegas, Malcolm Galatz of Orcas Island, Wash. and Hank Galatz of Chicago; a daughter, Karen Galatz of Las Vegas; six grandchildren, Dr. Leesa Galatz, Lara Galatz, Benjamin Galatz, Brandon Galatz, Jules Wellinghoff and Jacob Wellinghoff; and a sister, Evelyn Ellwanger of Las Vegas.
The family says donations can be made in Galatz's memory to the Jewish Community Day School of Las Vegas, Hadassah or the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas.
