Jury can't decide killer's sentence

A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the punishment phase in the case of the beating death of a 3-year-old girl.

Ten of the jurors in the Jacquin Keyshawn Webb trial thought the 31-year-old should get a no-parole life sentence in the death of Nichelle Miller, but two others wanted to give him a 20-year to life sentence.

According to police, the girl died on June 24, 1999, one day after she was taken to University Medical Center suffering from head injuries, numerous bruises and a broken leg.

Jurors last week convicted Webb of first-degree murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm.

The attorneys on the case are expected to meet March 13 with District Judge Jeffrey Sobel to see how the case should proceed.

Two suspects will be tried separately

Two people accused of a deadly robbery at the Stratosphere will be tried separately.

District Judge Sally Loehrer decided Wednesday that Jamie Shuey and Val Stallworth should face separate juries in connection with the Memorial Day weekend strangulation death of Stephen Nally, 42.

Nally's bound and gagged body was found in his hotel room May 20. A check of security videotapes showed that no one but Stallworth, Shuey and Nally had entered the room between May 26 and May 29.

The couple also faces charges in connection with a May 15 incident at the Travelodge Motel, 2830 Las Vegas Blvd. South. In that incident, a couple staying at the motel were tied up with torn bedsheets and robbed of credit cards, cash and a cellular phone.

Shuey is scheduled to go to trial July 30 and Stallworth's trial will follow. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
