Position cut saves some cash

The elimination of positions in two departments of the Clark County School District is expected to save $229,346.
The move came as a part of final touches on Superintendent Carlos Garcia's reorganization plan.
But questions were raised during Thursday's School Board meeting on how the savings came about.
Allin Chandler, executive director of the administrator's union, said the district is developing a pattern of inconsistencies in how it re-classifies jobs into higher pay ranges.
Chandler said the union supports better pay for administrators, but it must be done even-handedly.
Superintendent Carlos Garcia said he is ordering a review of the district's employee classification system.
The School Board approved a series of changes in positions for two departments -- alternative education and curriculum and professional development.
In some cases, lower-paying positions were eliminated and replaced with higher-paying ones.
Garcia said some of the jobs have been combined and carry more responsibility.
Individual salaries listed for jobs deleted under the curriculum and professional development department ranged from $37,909 to $84,991.
Salaries for the new positions ranged from $65,355 to $90,209.
