Letter: Dust created by mall project is overwhelming
Friday, June 29, 2001 | 10:30 a.m.
I read a lot about efforts to control the dust problem here in the valley. But it seems nothing is ever done even to try to eliminate at least some of this problem.
I have called the health department twice to advise them of the dust violations of the construction at the Fashion Show mall ... all without results. My son has made visits to the doctor resulting from this overwhelming dust problem at the mall. The doctor's diagnosis? Bronchitis and acute sinus infection. The doctor stated, "Probably from the dust particles where he works."
Construction companies do nothing about watering down the mounds of blowing dust, even though I reported this violation twice to the health department. Employees working at this mall are forced to park a great distance from their work areas, which makes the dust problem intolerable.
Is there anyone capable of fixing this health problem? It seems the health department is powerless. Perhaps they just ignore the problem, hoping it will go away.
When construction is finished in three years, I guess that will be the solution. Remember, it also affects the lifeblood of Las Vegas ... the tourists cough all the way home.
