UNLV football player John Greer has been named the 2001 Mountain West Conference male student-athlete of the year, the league announced Wednesday.
Greer, a native of Apple Valley, Calif., closed out a stellar career as an offensive lineman for the Rebels by becoming the only football player to earn 2001 first-team All-MWC and academic All-MWC in the same season.
A starter in 44 of his 45 career games from 1996-2000, the senior co-captain was the cornerstone in transforming UNLV football from a winless team in 1998 to Las Vegas Bowl champions in 2000.
Greer graduated from UNLV with a 3.50 grade point average in managerial finance.
"There's a big stereotype of a dumb lineman," Greer said. "I don't like to blow my cover, but I think I just did."
