Local Americorps programs get federal funding

Nevada's Americorps programs has received nearly $1 million in federal funding.

Americorps, under the Nevada Commission for National and Community Services Inc., was given $956,342 by the Corporation for National Service for its six statewide programs.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas' Serving for Success program received $211,752. This program offers after-school tutoring, literacy activities and homework assistance for 840 at-risk youths.

The other Las Vegas-based project, the Nevada Collaboration for Homeless Veterans, received $169,566. The program works to help homeless veterans find and keep a job and a place to live through providing care and teaching life skills.
