Third municipal golf course sought

Wednesday, June 27, 2001 | 10:38 a.m.

Boulder City will likely have its third public golf course under way as early as August.

The Boulder City Council on Tuesday approved a request by Red Ridge Golf Development Co. to appraise 240 acres in the River Mountain foothills northwest of Industrial Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway for 18 holes of public golf.

The City Council in November 1998 approved an original lease of 160 acres with an option to lease an additional 80. Red Ridge planned 18 holes to start, with the potential to build nine more. But financing for the project fell through.

The new lease would allow Red Ridge to build 36 holes on 480 acres.

Mike Geroux of Red Ridge has secured new backing from Boulder Ridge Golf, LLC, which is managed by the developer of Wolf Creek golf course in Mesquite.

City Manager John Sullard called Boulder Ridge Golf a "very real" investor.

Councilman Joe Hardy expressed concern that the new, larger public course could compete with the city's second municipal course. That 27-hole course should break ground a few miles south of Red Ridge July 10.

Sullard said a clause in the Red Ridge contract requires it to charge 25 percent more for a round of golf, ensuring the city's municipal course a pricing advantage.

Red Ridge will pay $228,000 annually to lease the original 160 acres. The appraisal approved Tuesday will determine the cost of the lease for the additional acreage.

The City Council in August will decide whether to approve the project.
