State seeks corporate sponsor for lottery

Wednesday, June 27, 2001 | 11:03 a.m.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Lottery wants a corporate sponsor to help market its Pick 3 game in exchange for name rights.

"We're basically borrowing the idea from the sports industry," said Executive Director Geoffrey Gonsher. "It's done a fantastic job over the years creating and rejuvenating interest in teams and helping to fund and build major facilities."

The state-run lottery can't take cash but wants a company that would spend at least $825,000 marketing the game in exchange for using the company's name as part of the game's title.

The corporate logo would appear on the about 7.5 million tickets sold annually and would be used as part of the televised Pick 3 drawings six nights a week.

One reason for the move is that the Legislature reduced the lottery's advertising budget by 30 percent. Another is a continuing slump in ticket sales.
