Letter: Stop tax gripes; pay notch babies

Wednesday, June 27, 2001 | 9:15 a.m.

Could you stand one more letter on school taxes?

The people who are griping about it ought to be ashamed of themselves. I am a 77-year-old widow and I am more than happy to pay them. I consider it a privilege. Who do they think are paying their Social Security benefits? It's our children and grandchildren, and they're paying in a lot more than we ever paid. Sometimes I'm ashamed to admit I'm a senior citizen.

While I've got your attention, I'd like to mention one gripe I have. The government is building a memorial for the World War II vets, who consist mostly of notch babies. They can forget the memorial and just pay the notch babies what they cheated them out of. It's a travesty of justice. These people are dying off at the rate of 1,500 a month.

If they wait a few years longer they'll all be dead. They fought for their country for many years and this is the thanks they get? Why should being born in the wrong year cause people to get up to $200 a month less than others? I know our replacement rates have been reached, but so were those born in 1916 who are getting so much more.

Many thanks to Sen. Harry Reid, Rep. Shelley Berkley, Rep. Jim Gibbons and Sen. John Ensign for going to bat for us.
