Mojave graduate receives $5,000

Aisha R. Ortiz, a recent graduate of Mojave High School, will receive a $5,000 scholarship from Mervyn's department store for her academic excellence and commitment to her community.

She was one of 18 graduating seniors nationwide awarded the Mervin G. Morris Educational Scholarship for children and grandchildren of Mervyn's employees.

Students must have an outstanding scholastic record, participate in extracurricular activities, show a financial need and have been accepted into an accredited university or college.

Annual honors given at Sine Die Gala

The Nevada Trial Lawyers Association honored two lawyers and an assemblyman last week during its Sine Die Gala, celebrating the adjournment of the 71st Nevada Legislature.

The association honored John Squire Drendel with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his 50-year career in law.

Richard Myers of Crockett & Myers received the Trial Lawyer of the Year award for his ongoing work with the enforcement of the Americans with Disability Act.

Jack Jeffrey was awarded Consumer Advocate of the Year for advocating for working men and women of Nevada through his political career as an assemblyman and lobbyist.

The Salvation Army

has named six new advisory board members: Steven Dastrup, Wells Fargo Bank; Gary Zee, Opulence Studios Inc.; Stephanie Stallworth, Cox Communications; Marilyn Ming, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension; Edward Phillips, Palm Mortuary, and Lillian McMorris, KVVU Channel 5.
