Letter: City ignores downtown need for post office
Monday, June 25, 2001 | 9:13 a.m.
There is something awfully backward about the city's pursuit of the downtown post office for some indeterminate use -- other than as a post office, that is. At least Sun reporter Diana Sahagun made no mention of the building's use as a post office being obsolete in her June 20 story, "City covets historic post office." Clearly, there still is great need for a downtown post office.
Now when the city took over the equally historic Fifth Street School, referenced in the story, it had long before ceased to be used as an elementary school. Not so, however, with the post office.
While the needs of a downtown post office can perhaps be adequately met by other nearby walking distance sites, it would seem far more logical that such needs be met and clearly defined well before transferring the existing post office to the city. Let's get the cart back behind the horse. Or must we just have to get used to letting the big boys do their thing and the little guys get to pick at the horse droppings? And we thought the arrogant use of eminent domain was bad.
