Valentine, Jerbic salaries boosted
Las Vegas City Manager Virginia Valentine and City Attorney Brad Jerbic were given raises amounting to 9.5 percent Wednesday by the City Council.
The total raise for each consisted of a 3.5 percent cost-of-living increase and a 6 percent merit increase.
The council met with Valentine and Jerbic in a closed session that lasted almost two hours.
In open session, before formally awarding their raises, Mayor Oscar Goodman said the council is looking carefully at all spending because of a slim budget this fiscal year, which begins July 1.
"We are facing as a city some very serious financial problems, and we are trying to be as prudent as possible," Goodman said.
Valentine's annual salary will increase from $152,900 to $167,425. Jerbic's annual salary will increase from $112,217 to $122,877.
In addition, the council approved a 3.5 percent cost-of-living increase for appointed employees who are not covered under executive or management compensation plans. The increases will cost $444,070.
National group to build facility
The American Bicycle Association has been selected by the city to construct a professional bicycle racing facility at Ed Fountain Park at Vegas Drive and Decatur Boulevard.
The city's Public Works Department will negotiate a contract with the company to finalize plans for the track, which is estimated to cost about $40,000.
The association promotes the sport on a nationwide level and has more than 250 tracks and 60,000 racing members in 44 states.
According to tentative plans, the facility will be open six days a weeks for open and organized races. Bikers will be required to purchase a 30-day membership for $25 or a yearly membership for $45.
