LV fuel surcharge eyed

The Nevada Taxicab Authority plans a special meeting next month to consider implementing a fuel surcharge for passengers on each taxi ride in Clark County.
The board is considering a charge of between 10 cents and 20 cents per trip to compensate for fuel costs, which have fluctuated dramatically since February.
A June survey by AAA of Northern California, which monitors Nevada gasoline prices, said Las Vegas gasoline was selling for an average price of $1.79 a gallon, down 3 cents from near-record highs a month earlier.
The proposed taxi fuel charge, which could take effect Aug. 1 if approved, is controversial because taxi rates were raised on May 1 by 10 cents a mile to $1.70 a mile.
Las Vegas' 14 taxi companies now collect 10 cents per one-seventeenth mile, up from 20 cents per one-eighth mile. Taxicab Authority Administrator Bob Anselmo said the rate increase was authorized, in part, to offset rising fuel prices.
A date for the meeting hasn't been set.
