Columnist Peter Benton: Flex memberships offer good benefits

Wednesday, June 20, 2001 | 10:09 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

After seeing ads in our local papers regarding Flex memberships at Billy Walters' area courses, enquiries were made. Please keep in mind that this offer is for Clark County residents only:

The basic Flex membership has an annual fee of $250 and provides unlimited golf and reduced green fees at the three Stallion Mountain courses along with the Desert Pines layout.

And added bonus is that if you sign up by July 13, a free round of golf at either the Bali Hai or Royal Links courses will be tossed in, or, if you prefer, three free rounds at either Stallion Mountain or Desert Pines.

Summer rates for Flex members started June 11 with greens fees for both Stallion Mountain and Desert Pines being $35. In-season rates will be $45 on weekdays and $60 on weekends at Stallion Mountain and $56 at Desert Pines.

Also being offered is the premium Flex membership. For $750 annually it includes the same benefits as the aforementioned Flex membership, but has discount privileges at the Bali Hai and Royal Links courses as well. Golf rates for Stallion Mountain and Desert Pines are the same as the basic membership, including 50 percent off the regular non-discounted rates at both Bali Hai and Royal Links.

A free round of golf at either of the latter layouts will be granted to premium Flex members who sign up by July 13, or, if they prefer, three free rounds at Stallion Mountain or Bali Hai.

The two memberships will be available to Clark County residents through Dec. 31. For further information, call Walters Golf at 777-7917.

Durant's 79-74--153 over the par-72 layout edged Diane Byman, who fired 80-75--155, and Sherry Jackson, who was third with 84-76--160.

Southshore's Sherry Corsello was crowned net champion after rounds of 77 and 65. Linda Martin followed with 69-75--144 and third at 70-75--145 was Pauline May.

The highlight of the petite Durant's play was eagling the uphill, 471-yard par-5 12th hole via a good drive, well-struck 5-wood and a superb pitching wedge that found the cup.

The highest winning score of 3-over-par 283 was recorded during the first U.S. Open at Southern Hills, won by Tommy Bolt in 1958.

Tom Lehman's 12-under-par 268 was the lowest winning score, coming in the 1996 Tour Championship.
