Editorial: Mandatory vaccines surely are welcome

The state Board of Health acted responsibly last week when it passed regulations mandating that children receive vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B and chicken pox before they can be enrolled in school. Hepatitis can be fatal, making those vaccines a necessity. Clark County hasn't been immune to hepatitis, with an outbreak occurring at an elementary school in April. The school district and county health officials support the mandatory vaccines.
Government has an obligation to offer these essential preventive measures. Vaccines not only are a cost-effective method of health care, but they also help keep children from having to endure debilitating and sometimes fatal diseases.
