Volunteer training offered
Family Home Hospice offers ongoing training to those interested in volunteering. Volunteers provide emotional support to terminally ill patients, caregiver respite, errand running, companionship and socialization for patients and caregivers, office help and assistance with the hospice's bereavement program. To register for an upcoming training session, interested volunteers should call 671-1193.
Weekend benefit at Santa Fe Station
The Bowl for Kids' Sake event to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada will be held 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Fe Station hotel-casino and July 28 and 29 at the Texas Station hotel-casino.
Individuals can put together a team of four bowlers with each participant raising a minimum of $100 in pledges or companies may sponsor teams of four for a minimum pledge of $400. Prizes such as a big screen television, DVD player and airline tickets will be awarded to the individual raising the most money in collected pledges.
There are nearly 200 children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. For more information, call 731-2227, Ext. 438.
Group accepting nominations
Mediators of Southern Nevada is accepting nominations for the 2001 Peacemaker of the Year award. Everyone is encouraged to nominate those persons who bring peace and harmony to their families, their community or their affiliation group.
This award will highlight the fifth annual Nevada Mediation Week, Sept. 15 through Sept. 21. The winners will be honored by MSN and the community at the Peacemaker Dinner Sept. 20.

Registration set for benefit event
Paradise Sertoma is sponsoring its fifth annual Walter Pinjuv Classis Golf Tournament beginning with registration at 6:30 a.m. Friday at the Legacy Golf Course, 130 Par Excellence Drive. The $135 entry fee includes: green fees, golf cart, beverages, luncheon, award party, and a chance to win one of the many door prizes. The cost for a foursome is $500.
Sertoma is a service organization whose purpose is to accelerate progress in health, education, freedom, and democracy. The proceeds of this year's tournament will be used for scholarships to summer camps for hearing impaired children. For more information, call Chris Donohue at 521-2409.
County sponsors food program
Clark County Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor the Nevada Department of Education and Health's Summer Food Service Program now through August 29. A free breakfast and lunch will be served to all children enrolled in the Rec Trek Programs at Paradise, 4770 S. Harrison St; Whitney, 5700 E. Missouri Ave.; and Von Tobel Community Centers, 3610 E. Carey Ave. The program is made possible through a grant from U.S. Department of Agriculture.
