Letter: Try living where the homeless live

Monday, June 18, 2001 | 9:16 a.m.

Enough is enough. I am so tired of reading how the city of Las Vegas is cold and heartless toward the homeless and that they do not care about them. What about Boulder City, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Clark County as a whole?

Now that the homeless shelters and services in the city of Las Vegas are in a crisis, what compassionate cities in our great valley are willing to lend a helping hand? If the county and other cities would have provided these same services, maybe the homeless situation would not be in the critical stage it is in now.

Place the blame where it belongs -- on the cities that do not want the homeless in their back yards or their well-maintained sheltered communities.

I live four blocks from these shelters and two blocks from City Hall, and there isn't a day that I don't see or hear the homeless in my back yard. We live with this 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have had two streets that led to Las Vegas Boulevard closed and we still have the homeless or vagrants wander our quiet streets or camp in our back yards. Enough is enough.

Unless you live in this homeless area you all out there in your safe environment do not know the real world. Take a Sunday drive one of these days and visit our "real world." Or try using the library on Las Vegas Boulevard North during the day or the Dula Senior Citizen Center on Bonanza Road.

You cannot find a seat in these public places or do research on the computers or microfiche area because the seats are all taken by the homeless.
