Letter: Amador owes apology to many in Clark County

We, the members of the Augustus Society, are appalled concerning an insensitive remark by attorney Michael Amador. More specifically, he stated that he could not have any connections to the mob because his name did not end in a vowel.

Therefore, anyone reading this callous and irresponsible remark would have to assume that all Italian-Americans are in the mob or connected to the mob because our names end in a vowel.

Such remarks only serve to reinforce negative stereotypes.

The 100 men and women of the Augustus Society are Italian-American professionals from all walks of life. Our society is comprised of doctors, lawyers, educators and entrepreneurs whose names end in vowels.

This organization has also provided over $550,000 of scholarship monies to needy Italian-American students and thousands of dollars to needy Italian-American families. We have worked very hard to dispel the very stereotype to which Amador refers.

Perhaps Amador would be better served to more assiduously prepare his cases rather than make ridiculous, cruel and insensitive remarks.

The 100,000-plus men and women in Clark County whose names end in vowels look forward to an apology from Michael Amador.

THOMAS G. BARBERINI, President, Augustus Society
