Community garage sale scheduled
Media Partners for Pets will host a community garage sale from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at H2O to Go, 4345 W. Tompkins Ave. Items range from large and small appliances, clothing, books, CDs, knick knacks, antiques, furniture, baby items, pet-related merchandise, and more.
Media Partners for Pets is a non-profit humane animal rescue organization whose goal is stop the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. All sales are considered tax-deductible donations, and all proceeds go to continue the group's mission of saving animal lives.
Items in good-condition can be donated for the sale left at the warehouse located at the above address. Drop off hours are: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday. For more information, call 307-1566.
'Art From the Heart' honors Katz
Family and Child Treatment of Southern Nevada will hold its annual fund-raiser, "Art From the Heart," from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday at the Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. The event will honor Andy Katz, president of Manpower Inc., with the "From the Heart" award.
FACT is a nonprofit, United Way agency that provides counseling services and programs to help children, adults and families overcome and heal from the traumas of childhood sexual abuse, neglect and violence. Its Art Therapy program helps child victims of abuse regain a greater sense of self-esteem and autonomy through creative self-expression.
Tickets for "Art from the Heart" are $60 per person, and raffle tickets are $5 each or 6 tickets for $25 and are available by calling 258-5855.
Free show to be held at Lorenzi Park
The public is welcome to a free slide presentation from 1-3 p.m. on mountain lions, elk, deer, big horn sheep and antelope in Nevada. Saturday at the Nevada State Museum in Lorenzi Park.
Information about the adoption and care of desert tortoises will also be discussed. For more information, call 739-8043.
Tips of preserving records offered
Jack Oliver will present "How to Preserve Family History and Genealogical Records via Videotape," at 1 p.m. Sunday in the multipurpose room of the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
Oliver will discuss methods of interviewing family members, individually and in groups, along with tips on editing.

Father's Day event planned
A Father's Day dance is being hosted from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.
The event allows fathers and their children to spend quality time together and will include music, dancing and a variety of contests. For more information, call 565-2121.
'Join Hands Day' event is Saturday
The Volunteer Center will celebrate "Join Hands Day" on Saturday. This is a day each year when young people and adults tackle a local problem and join together to perform community services. The goal of Join Hands Day is not just to address a community need, but to work to end age segregation that drives generations apart. Adult and youth work as equals in the project from start to finish.
The Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada is helping their Youth Council team up with Senior Friends and Big Brothers/Big Sisters to hold a "Mentor for a Day" fair. A variety of activities are being planned for mentees currently waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. The event will recruit mentors as well as give boys and girls the fun of having mentor, at least for one day.
The Volunteer Center can facilitate and support other adult/youth partnerships for Join Hands Day projects. The Center can help find partners for groups that want to perform service projects, help groups identify projects that are needed, and help facilitate planning meetings. 'Ribbon of Life' fund-raiser scheduled
Golden Rainbow, a local HIV/AIDS organization, is hosting its 15th annual "Ribbon of Life" fundraising performance at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Mandalay Bay. More than 300 performers from the Las Vegas Strip will donate their time to the show.
Ticket prices range from $25 to $175. A silent auction is included in the event. Tickets are available by calling 384-2899.
'Desert People of the Past' show set
Cottonwood Cove Marina is offering the program "Desert People of the Past" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Cottonwood Cove Amphitheater. The Indians that have the Lake Mohave region home are an industrious group that traveled throughout the area; some developed horticulture to meet their needs. Learn how they lived in the past and what changes they experienced when immigrants moved into the area. For more information or directions, call (520) 754-3272 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Free clinic for youths is Saturday
A free Youth Sportsmanship Clinic will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the West Community Center, 2050 Sapphire Stone Ave.
There event is being funded by a Youth Athletic Grant from the city of Las Vegas. For additional information, call 229-2330.
Orozco speaking at Martinez Elementary
Jose Luis Orozco, author of award-winning, best-selling children's books and music will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Renaldo Martinez Elementary School, 350 E. Judson Ave.
Jose has been called "a God-send for every bilingual-bicultural parent, teacher and/or educator." In his performances, Jose teaches children about the rich Latin American culture, history and language, through music, drama and audience participation, he is responsible for maintaining Latin America's rich oral tradition alive.

Flag Day Social event on tap
The Clark County Republican Party will host their Flag Day Social celebrating the symbol of the nation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Castaways hotel-casino, 2800 Fremont St.
Over 700 Clark County six-grade students participated with essay entries on the subject, "What 'Old Glory' Means To Me." All individuals who were involved in the judging process have stated these essays were immensely impressive and emotionally touching.

Nurse of the Year nominations sought
The March of Dimes is currently accepting nominations for their 16th annual Nurse of the Year Awards Banquet 6 p.m. Friday at the Texas Station hotel-casino.
Tickets are $45 and available through the March of Dimes office.
