Letter: Area politicians refuse to rein in rapid growth
Friday, June 8, 2001 | 5:04 a.m.
Once again the people have spoken. Election results are in and a new children's hospital for the county, and more police for Henderson, have been defeated. Not even the promise of "no tax increase" for property owners could persuade voters to pass the hospital vote. Sensible people welcome more police, fire, hospitals, schools, parks, water treatment facilities, etc., if it made a difference in their quality of life.
However, the politicians just keep approving more growth and more expansion. At this rate, we'll never get ahead, we won't even maintain. A perfect example is the widening of U.S. 95 to 10 lanes. Upon completion, it will take the same time to get to work, and we will be back where we started. Does the phrase "slow the growth" mean anything to anyone out there who makes decisions?
Do the city fathers see what is happening? If those who keep approving more building projects, both commercial and residential, enjoy the never-ending rat race, they should move to Los Angeles or Phoenix. Those cities should welcome you. After all, they don't have any problems, do they?
Stop proposing more ways to spend our money from bonds nearing retirement and start concentrating on ways to improve our existing quality of life. Until you do this, the voters will keep voting "No" on your proposals, and eventually your track record will catch up with you and you'll be gone. Quality of life and poorly planned growth are like oil and vinegar -- they don't mix!
