Editorial: New definition for term ‘sour grapes’

Friday, June 8, 2001 | 5 a.m.

In response to the defeat of the children's hospital ballot question, one of its prominent supporters unfairly lashed out at County Commissioner Myrna Williams, saying her conduct was "completely despicable." Her sin? Dr. Kenneth Misch, University Medical Center's director of pediatric inpatient services, was upset that Williams helped place the initiative on the June ballot instead of on last November's ballot, which draws a heavier turnout. Misch added that she has "hindered the care of the children in this community."

The reality is that it was correct to place the question on the June ballot, allowing enough time to learn whether there was a genuine need for a new hospital. And to suggest Williams doesn't care about the welfare of children is absurd: She is well known for her standout work as a public official for bringing about all kinds of improved services for children. Misch's rant misses the mark by a country mile.
