Letter: Hypocritical Bush’s tax cuts help only rich

Thursday, June 7, 2001 | 8:23 a.m.

What a hypocritical stance, on helping the poor to solve poverty, that President Bush is taking.

In an address at Notre Dame, he said his plans to fund religious groups to provide social services is the "third stage of combating poverty in America." He said it ranks with the welfare reform of 1966 and President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty.

Baloney.

LBJ's War on Poverty produced Medicare, Medicaid and Head Start. And now these programs are in peril. This is because of Bush's outrageous tax cuts, which aid primarily the rich, endanger the everyday conduct of government operations and invite deficit spending.

The "compassionate conservative" has spoken the pro-rich litany. His message: make the rich richer and the heck with the poor.
