Last day of school for most valley kids

Thursday, June 7, 2001 | 10:40 a.m.

Today marks the final day of classes for most students in the Clark County School District.

Keeping in line with past practices in the district, additional school police and law enforcement officials planned to patrol schools to ensure safety as students were released. Central office staff also were to be on hand to supervise.

But school continues for about 84,000 students -- more than one-third of the district -- who attend year-round schools. There are 83 year-round elementary schools and four year-round middle schools.

Year-round middle schools are being phased out, and all will be nine-month schools as of the 2001-2002 school year.

School officials have issued a reminder that motorists remain cautious around school zones throughout the summer.

The regular school year begins Aug. 30.
