Church members to fight Tennessee lottery

Thursday, June 7, 2001 | 10:52 a.m.

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. -- West Tennessee Methodist are gearing up to oppose a state lottery and other forms of legalized gambling.

Delegates to the annual meeting of Methodists from West Tennessee and western Kentucky voted Tuesday to organize an antigambling task force.

The task force will draw up a plan of attack for opposing a lottery and will urge other Methodist across Tennessee to join in that effort.

Bishop William Morris of the group's Memphis Conference said gambling is addictive and destructive to families and communities.

"It's a form of idolatry," he said at the group's meeting at Collierville United Methodist Church in suburban Memphis.

A resolution passed by the Methodist describes gambling as "a menace to society, deadly to the best interests of moral, social, economic and spiritual life and destructive of good government."
