Power conservation sought

Wednesday, June 6, 2001 | 10:40 a.m.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority is asking its customers to conserve not only water this summer, but power as well.

Print and TV ads will begin Friday as the authority goes public with its message. Articles will also appear in the Southern Nevada Water Authority newsletter and inserts will be placed in water bills. Information will also be posted on the authority's website at www.snwa.com.

Water from Lake Mead is pumped 35 miles to the Las Vegas Valley, most of it uphill. The pumping requires 3.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity on an average July day. That is enough power for 50,000 homes, water authority spokesman Vince Alberta said.

By reducing water demands, the water authority is able to reduce its energy requirements, making more power available to other customers.

The cities of Henderson and Las Vegas, along with the Clark County Sanitation District, have adopted plans to conserve energy as well. The Las Vegas Valley Water District has started a conservation competition for employees.
