Letter: Suggestions for schools fall on deaf ears

Wednesday, June 6, 2001 | 8:39 a.m.

Having taught 23 years for the Clark County School District, and as the father of two children currently attending CCSD schools, it deeply concerns me to see the current state of our school district. More troubling, however, is the apathetic attitude of those in charge.

When our new administration came on the scene, I remember hearing a message of hope and encouragement. One in which open communication and the sharing of ideals would be encouraged.

Imagine the disappointment and discouragement after having written over 75 times to our school superintendent, School Board or other school district officials, only to receive one response from our superintendent and less than you could count on one hand from all the rest.

Suggestions for thought included: uniform codes of conduct for school violence and discipline, fiscal efficiency to help save money, innovative salary ideas, attracting and retaining quality teachers, family choice schools, more effective facility planning, successful second language programs, and student and staff transiency. All appear to have fallen on deaf ears.

It seems to me, this is not the way to encourage the exchange of ideas and open communication within our school district.

For 23 years the students that have passed through my classroom have learned to live by a message which has hung from our wall. "A man's actions are the mirror image of his character." Perhaps those leading our school district into the 21st century might consider its meaning.
