Kesterson center to host workshop
A silk greenhouse workshop will be held 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., Henderson.
Participation is $20 per person, with an additional supply fee of $25 due to the instructor at class.
The instructor will teach participants how to create a variety of different sized topiaries (trees) for use in the home or office. Step-by-step instruction ensures participants will learn the skills necessary to be able to duplicate them at home.
Workshop participants may bring supplies they would like to work with, such as ivy, sunflowers and tulips. A complete supply list is available at registration. For more information or to register, call 565-2121.
All-day camp features instructors
The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will introduce youth to the fundamentals of golf in an interactive, all-day camp 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Reflection Bay Golf Club.
Seasoned instructors from Reflection Bay will introduce young players to the fundamentals of golf, from putting to the full swing. The session will also cover other facets of the game, including trouble shots and bunker shots as well as a complete discussion of the rules and etiquette of the sport.
To further enhance young players' skills, instructors will use digital video equipment to provide each student with a videotape of his or her swing. The tapes can be used to help students reinforce proper form and pinpoint trouble areas. Call 434-4131.
Sunset Park will host 'Taking a Kid'
Clark County Parks and Recreation is presenting the program "Taking a Kid," a fishing derby scheduled 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Park lake, 2601 E. Sunset Road.
Registration and general information will be available at the south side of the lake closest to the Eastern Avenue park entrance. Fishing licenses are not required on this day only in celebration of Nevada Free Fishing Day.
The 9-acre lake will be stocked by the Nevada Division of Wildlife prior to the event. The fishing competition will be for catfish only.
For more information, call 455-8200.
Hiking combined with literature
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitor's Center.
To make reservations or for information call 363-1922. One of the coming programs is "The Desert in Literature," with which aults can enjoy a moderate two-mile hike into Pine Creek Canyon on Sunday and discuss how different authors sought inspiration and solitude from the dessert.
The National Kidney Foundation of Nevada
