Letter: Happy to help pay for schools

Perhaps letter writer Judi Root should take a look at Sandy Thompson's commentary on the Opinion page of the May 27 issue. Quoting from Joceyln Elders, the former U.S. surgeon general: "It's our responsibility to make sure that all children have an opportunity to grow up educated, anything less will destroy our society as we now know it. The money that we spend on children is an investment -- not an expense. As the old saying goes: 'Our society grows great when old men and old women plant trees under whose shade they know they will never sit.' "
Yes, Judi Root, it sounds like sour grapes to me. I, too, am a senior living on a fixed income, but I am certainly happy to contribute to the education of my grandchildren and their children, and hopefully their parents will feel the same way when they reach their senior years.
