Internet gambling winner sought by police

Monday, June 4, 2001 | 10:31 a.m.

HONOLULU -- Honolulu police are looking for an Internet gambler who won more than $176,000 at an online casino.

A press release from the Caribbean-based InterCasino says a Hawaii man who calls himself "Moosed" won the jackpot with a royal flush.

Casino gambling is illegal in Hawaii, and the man would face criminal charges if he declares his winnings. But if he does not, he would risk prosecution for federal tax evasion.

Honolulu tax attorney Mervyn Lee said if Moosed were his client, he would advise him to declare his winnings immediately and risk a local misdemeanor charge. He noted that tax evasion is a felony.

Lt. Michael Fujioka of the Honolulu Police Department's vice division said if Moosed exists and if the case falls under local police jurisdiction, police will track him down in cyberspace.

If police ignore Internet gamblers in Hawaii, "the floodgates will open," he said.
