Admitted sex offender found
A 25-year-old Hawaii man wanted after fleeing before he was sentenced on a sexual assault charge was arrested in Las Vegas Wednesday.
Joshua Reed was found by the local Criminal Apprehension Team hiding in a sofa-bed in an apartment in the 3800 block of Hazelwood Street near Twain Avenue and Paradise Road.
Reed in March pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault and kidnapping but failed to return to court for sentencing, police said. He was accused of breaking into the home of his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, holding her and her friend at knife-point and sexually assaulting her, police said.
Reed, using the name Erick Victor, flew to Los Angeles from Honolulu. He had been living in Las Vegas the past two months, police said.
The Criminal Apprehension Team, composed of detectives from Metro, Henderson and North Las Vegas police and special agents from the FBI and U.S. Marshal Service, searches the area for those wanted locally and in other jurisdictions.
Man arrested in stabbing death
A 39-year-old homeless man was in the Clark County jail this morning accused of killing another homeless man Thursday night.
Timothy Fay approached a Metro Police officer at a convenience store about 10:15 p.m. Thursday at Eastern and Stewart avenues saying he was robbed by two homeless men while he was sleeping.
Fay told the officer he stabbed a third homeless man he thought was involved in the robbery, but police determined the slain man had nothing to do with the robbery and had not threatened Fay, said Lt. Wayne Petersen of Metro's homicide unit
Police found the slain man in his camp in a desert area southwest of Stewart Avenue and Spectrum Boulevard. The slain man had not been identified this morning.
Fay was booked into the jail on a murder with a weapon charge. The man's death is the 67th homicide so far this year in Metro's jurisdiction compared with 41 homicides at the same point last year.
Probation given to Las Vegas man
A 29-year-old Las Vegas telemarketer has been placed on probation for three years and ordered to repay $13,978 to a 73-year-old New Jersey woman who was bilked out of the money in January 1979.
Dax G. Dekeado was sentenced Thursday by District Judge John McGroarty, who also ordered him to perform 16 hours of community service each month during his probationary period.
Dekeado had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of failure to register as a telemarketer.
Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said Dekeado telephoned the victim five times and told her she had won a large sum of money as part of a sweepstakes. However, she was told she had to wire money via Western Union to Las Vegas to pay taxes on the cash award.
The woman sent the money but never got the award.
Del Papa said, "Consumers should never send money to telephone salespersons who claim they are prizewinners.
Man sought in two bank heists
The FBI is looking for a man in connection with two bank robberies, including one that happened Thursday on West Sahara Avenue.
The robber is described as white, 20 to 22, 5 feet 7 inches and 150 pounds. He has blond hair and a thin build, an FBI spokesman said.
The man was wearing a long-sleeve Puma brand T-shirt during Thursday's robbery at the Bank of the West, 2980 W. Sahara. He is believed to be responsible for the May 21 robbery of Citibank, 4056 S. Jones Blvd., officials say.
Anyone with information about these robberies is asked to call the FBI at 385-1281.
