Locals gaming giant lays off 24

Tuesday, July 31, 2001 | 10:27 a.m.

Station Casinos Inc. has laid off 24 middle-management executives.

Lesley Pittman, director of corporate and government relations for the company that owns seven Las Vegas-area properties targeting the locals market, said Station also eliminated 16 positions that had been unfilled.

The employees who were laid off, including seven-year corporate spokesman Jack Taylor, were notified Friday and Monday, Pittman said.

Of Station's 11,000 employees, about 400 are in corporate positions. The company hopes to save between $1 million and $2 million a year with the cutbacks.

Pittman said the layoffs come in the wake of declining cash flow resulting from a general slowdown in the economy, increased competition, higher energy costs and trouble at the recently acquired Fiesta hotel in North Las Vegas.

Pittman said employees who were laid off would be given an opportunity to work at Green Valley Ranch Station, a project Station is building with partner American Nevada Corp. However, hiring at the property, which is expected to open in December, won't occur until fall. American Nevada is owned by the Greenspun family, which also owns the Las Vegas Sun.
