This year's Governor's Awards in the Humanities will honor Nevada author Robert Laxalt, who died earlier this year, along with others who have contributed to the humanities in Nevada.
The ceremony will be at the County Government Center on Oct. 20.
Laxalt will be honored with the Shepperson Book Award, given annually for the best book published about Nevada or by a Nevada author. Laxalt's book "Travels with my Royal" was published earlier this year and won him the honor.
Glenn Schaeffer, president and chief financial officer of Mandalay Bay, Inc., will be honored for his work in establishing Las Vegas as a City of Asylum for writers in exile and for creating the Institute for Modern Letters at UNLV.
Other recipients will be the Lied Discovery Children's Museum, William Metscher of the Central Nevada Historical Society in Tonopah, Las Vegas Senior Center Humanities Discussion Group, Howard Hughes Corp. and Christopher Hudgins, former chairman of UNLV Department of English and of the Nevada Humanities Committee.
Also, Daniel Greenspun, vice president of the Sun, will receive the Arts and Humanities Award for public service.
Thrift store plans crucial sale
Las Vegas' first thrift shop, the Junior League's Repeat Boutique, needs help to keep its doors open. In an effort to do this it is having a sale through the end of August, marking everything half off.
The Repeat Boutique sells donated items, including furniture, toys, books, housewares and clothes. The store, at 100 S. Maryland Parkway, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Junior League members operate the store.
For more information, contact the Junior League at 822-6536.
