Editorial: Affordable housing is critical for the city

Las Vegas city officials were thrilled last August when they learned that the area's largest home builder, KB Home, would partner with American CityVista to build affordable housing here. But that excitement vanished in March after American CityVista pulled out of the project following objections from city officials and nearby residents, who said the builder's plans created too many homes on small lots and afforded little room for open spaces.
It is encouraging then that Beazer Homes is looking to fill the void. Beazer Homes' project would include 283 homes, ranging from 1,177 square feet to 1,859 square feet. So far its plans are being well-received.
Everyone dreams of one day owning a home, but the lack of affordable housing has been a tough problem to solve, here and nationally. It is hoped that this plan pans out and provides residents who have lower incomes with the opportunity to buy their own homes, too.
