Indiana college honors local grad
A Bishop Gorman High School graduate was awarded a presidential scholarship by Saint Mary's College.
Rosemary O'Donnell will be a freshman at the college in Notre Dame, Ind. next year. O'Donnell was awarded the scholarship because of her academic performance in high school and involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. She has the opportunity to renew the scholarship for four years.
Six faculty, staff members are honored
The Community College of Southern Nevada honored six faculty and staff members for their work in the 2000/2001 academic year.
The six employees received merit cash awards for their service to the college. Professors Carolyn Fowler and Barbara Smigel were honored as the outstanding faculty members of the year; Robert Weed, information systems manager, and Rudy Starks, architect, were named the professional staff members of the year, and John Guislinger and Lori Dousett are the outstanding classified employees of the year.
Service awards were also given to 25 employees for their years of work with the college, and four faculty members retired, including Smigel.
Vaughn honored for gifts to children
Rick Vaughn, owner of three Miracle-Ear Centers in Las Vegas and one in Reno, has been named the first Miracle-Ear Children's Foundation Champion.
Vaughn was recognized for giving away 27 hearing aids to 15 underprivileged children since 1994.
The foundation is a nonprofit group that works with Miracle-Ear Centers nationwide to give free hearing aids to low-income children 16 and under. For more information about the foundation, call (800) 234-5422.
Clark County Coroner Ron Flud
was recently elected president of the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners for the 2001/2002 term. Flud oversees a staff of 40 that conducts more than 8,000 death investigations a year.
